Herrsching and Lake Ammersee

Herrsching is a small town (population 8,000) on the east shore of beautiful Lake Ammersee, 35km (ca. 20miles) southwest of Munich. Located in the Five Lakes District and close to the Bavarian Alps, it is the perfect starting point for sight-seeing and holidays. The city of Munich with its museums, churches and many more sightseeing and shopping opportunities can be reached easily by S-Bahn (urban rail) in less than an hour. The famous castles Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, and Linderhof are located only 70km (ca. 45miles) in the south. The Monastery Andechs with its 15th century church and its famous beer brewery lies in the Herrsching neighborhood.

Enjoy the wonderful landscape in the south of Munich, Bavarian style of living in the beer gardens and typical Bavarian restaurants, sailing on the Lake Ammersee, walking, hiking and bike tours. The Ammersee shipping company takes you over the lake in one of its paddle wheel boats. And if you like to stay a few days longer, the Oktoberfest in Munich, the world's largest beer festival and world-renowned Bavarian tradition, starts immediately after the conference.

Getting to Herrsching

To reach Herrsching by air, fly into Munich International Airport, which is served by most major airlines. Once you reach Muinch Airport, you have at least three options for your travel to Herrsching:

  • Take the S-Bahn (urban rail) to Herrsching by following the S-Bahn sign [S-Bahn sign]. You can choose between two lines which do not make much difference except on Saturday and Sunday, 13 and 14 September (see below):
    • Take line S8 to Geltendorf and Pasing which leaves the airport every 20min. Get off the train at Pasing and take the train S5 to Herrsching (leaves approximately 5min after arrival of train S1 at Laim).
    • Take line S1 to Neufahrn and Laim which leaves the airport every 20min. Get off the train at Laim and take the train S5 to Herrsching (leaves approximately 5min after arrival of train S1 at Laim). However, we do not recommend this option at the weekend Saturday and Sunday, 13 and 14 September. S5 will not go through Laim because of construction works at this weekend. So you would have to change trains twice: First at Laim (into S6 or S8), and then at Pasing (into S5) again. We recommend to use S8 instead of S1 at the airport at this weekend.
The whole trip from Munich Airport to Herrsching train station takes approx. 90min and costs EUR 9.20 (single trip, 4 zones). An electronic schedule for this specific connection is available here. A general journey planner is provided by the MVV.

The conference centre is 2km (ca. 1mile) away from the Herrsching train station. You can either walk if the weather is fine, or you can take a cab. Taxis should always be available at the railway station at Herrsching when a train arrives. If it happens that there is no taxi available, you can call +49 8152 925592 which connects you to a local taxi company. A ride to the conference centre is about EUR 6.50.

  • Take a cab. The distance is 70km, and it will take approximately 90min depending on the traffic. The cab will cost around EUR 100. Sharing a cab is possible. Taking a van may cost extra charges.
  • Rent a car and drive yourself. Munich International Airport is served by most major rental car agencies.

When arriving in Munich by rail at the Munich Main Railway Station, continue your journey by taking the S-Bahn (urban rail; just follow the S-Bahn sign [S-Bahn sign]) line S5 to Herrsching (not to Deisenhofen or Holzkirchen; that is the wrong direction!) which leaves the station every 20min or 40min. However, you cannot enter line S5 at the main station if you arrive at the weekend Saturday and Sunday, 13 and 14 September because of construction works at this weekend. You have to enter another line going west (e.g., S8 to Buchenau or Geltendorf). Get off at Pasing and enter S5 to Herrsching.

The whole trip from Munich Main Railway Station to Herrsching train station takes approx. 50min and costs EUR 6.90 (single trip, 3 zones). An electronic schedule for this specific connection is available here. A general journey planner is provided by the MVV. The conference centre is 2km (ca. 1mile) away from the Herrsching train station. You can either walk if the weather is fine, or you can take a cab as described above.
